Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal uses a handheld device that sends pulses of light energy into your skin, targeting hair follicles and inhibiting them from regrowing hair.

At Aesthetic Assets, Pam and Stacey use the Palomar Icon by CynosureⓇ, the only handheld device with the Skintel® Melanin Reader™. This device detects melanin levels in your skin, which helps your aesthetician determine the optimal setting for treatment. This feature makes this device safe for any type of skin.

What areas can be treated with the Palomar Icon?

The Palomar Icon can be used on many areas of the body, including your:

  • Face
  • Arms and underarms
  • Legs
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Chest

Because the laser targets the pigment in your hair follicle, it’s important to stop waxing, plucking, or using any other method that removes the hair root during the weeks leading up to your treatment. The day before your session, however, you should shave with a clean, new razor.

You should also avoid intense sun exposure for about six weeks before your laser hair removal treatment.

What can I expect during a laser hair removal session?

During each session, Pam or Stacey uses a handheld device to target and destroy the hair follicles in the treatment area. The system incorporates a built-in cooling system to minimize any discomfort; however, you may feel a slight sting, which many people compare to the feeling of a rubber band snapping on your skin.

Depending on the size of the area being treated, the session may take as little as five minutes or as much as an hour.

Laser treatment only works during the active phase of hair growth, so you’ll need multiple sessions to remove all hair from a given area. Most men and women need 3-6 sessions, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

What can I expect after laser hair removal?

Following treatment, your skin may be red and feel like you have a sunburn. Applying cold compresses and creams can help soothe the skin. You can resume your normal activities right away, but you should avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours following treatment.
