BOTOX vs. Dysport

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and wondered what happened? Time passed so quickly, and now you look like an older version of what you remember yourself to look like. Your hair is a little grayer, your face has little less volume, and you’re noticing the development of dynamic wrinkles around your eyes, on your forehead, and around your mouth. If this is true for you, then you might be looking at options that will allow you to regain some of the youthful appearance nature has robbed from you. If you’re thinking of smoothing out your unwanted wrinkles, it’s useful to consider the pros and cons of BOTOX® vs. Dysport®.

You have undoubtedly read about products like BOTOX® and Dysport®. Both of these products are used to help patients combat dynamic wrinkles that have developed over the years. Both injectables have a lot in common, while they also have some things that set them apart one from one another.

BOTOX® vs. Dysport®: What’s the Difference?

BOTOX® obviously has name recognition. It is so famous that it is part of the everyday lexicon. It is estimated that more than three million BOTOX® procedures are performed on an annual basis, and that is just in the United States. BOTOX® is attractive because it has been shown to be safe. BOTOX® has been shown to be effective, and for a few years, it was the only product of its kind on the market.

That changed a few years ago with the introduction of Dysport®. The product started in Europe and South America. Now, after receiving FDA approval, it is being used in the United States with great success.

Dysport® and BOTOX® are both neuromodulators. They work by interfering with the signals that are sent by your nervous system to your facial muscles. As a result, your facial muscles do not contract with the same harshness that they otherwise would. This means that you do not develop dynamic wrinkles when you make facial expressions such as smiling, laughing, crying or frowning.

Both injectables have additional proteins added to them to make them work. When it comes to BOTOX® vs. Dysport®, however, Dysport® has less of a protein load than its competitor. So, theoretically, Dysport® should produce longer lasting results than BOTOX®. However, whether this happens for you will depend on factors such as the intensity of your dynamic wrinkles and the treated areas.

BOTOX® spreads in more concentrated areas than Dysport® does. This can be a pro or a con depending on the area that you are treating. If you are covering a large area, such as the forehead, then you would need fewer injections of Dysport® because of how evenly it would spread on its own.
